James Bruce Davis represents title insurance companies and serves as appointed defense counsel in litigation involving real estate titles. Although much of his practice involves litigation, he understands that his mission is to solve his clients’ problems and trial is only a possible means to that end.

His recent practice has focused on the problems created by the real estate downturn that began in 2008. In this regard Mr. Davis has assisted his title insurance clients in defending closing protection letter claims and in resolving insurance coverage disputes.

Mr. Davis enjoys dealing with esoteric aspects of real property rights. He has represented clients in cases involving:

  • adverse possession;
  • bankruptcy and its affect on real estate titles;
  • easements and implied easements;
  • mortgage fraud;
  • railroad rights of way;
  • submerged land and formerly submerged land;
  • riparian rights;
  • tenants’ rights under the D.C. Rental Housing Conversion and Sale Act;
  • unrecorded property interests of the federal government;
  • water rights and water power rights.

He has authored numerous articles on real estate title, title insurance and closing protection letters.

Mr. Davis co-chaired the D.C. Bar's Section on Real Estate, Housing and Land Use and served as President of the District of Columbia Land Title Association. He has given numerous seminars for the National Business Institute, the Virginia State Bar and the American Bar Association’s Title Insurance Litigation Committee. His academic honors include Phi Beta Kappa and Order of the Coif. Mr. Davis served as law clerk to Justice George M. Cochran of the Virginia Supreme Court.
