Federal Contractors Face Mandatory E Verify Requirement as of September 8, 2009A federal judge in Greenbelt, Maryland ruled against a variety of employer groups seeking to prevent implementation of new regulations that require companies receiving federal contracts to register and participate in the E Verify program of the Department of Homeland Security. Unless matters change, it is likely that this requirement will become effective on September 8, 2009. E Verify is an electronic system by which employers must submit information on new hires, and in some cases existing employees who are going to be assigned to work on a federal contract, to the government, which will then verify the individual’s identity and authorization to work in the United States. It no longer will be sufficient simply to complete an I-9 form for employees covered by this regulation.
