Timothy Hughes Recognized as a "Leader in the Law" Honoree By Virginia Lawyers Weekly
Arlington, VA, August 20, 2010 - Bean, Kinney & Korman, one of Arlington's largest law firms and one of the most recognized independent law firms in Northern Virginia, announced today that Timothy R. Hughes, of counsel to the firm, has recently been recognized as a "Leader in the Law" honoree by Virginia Lawyers Weekly.  Each year, Virginia Lawyers Weekly presents this award to those in the legal field who are changing practice, advancing the law, improving the justice system and setting the standard for other lawyers.

Mr. Hughes has held many leadership roles in the community in the past year for the development of green building practices and related education and advocacy efforts.  In 2009, he became a LEED Accredited Professional to provide better informed guidance and insight to clients and the public on the law as it relates to the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.  He has also led Bean Kinney's internal and social media efforts for the purpose of educating the general public, the real estate industry and clients on the law as it relates to environmental sustainability issues.  Mr. Hughes has built a strong presence online on twitter, various publications and blogs, and by acting as Lead Editor, coordinating the design, and creating and contributing content for the Virginia Real Estate, Land Use and Construction Law Blog.  He has gained such a following that he was invited to be a guest blogger for Washington Business Journal.

Mr. Hughes represents the legal and business community with extensive traditional contributions as well.  He dedicates numerous hours to pro bono work, volunteering and community involvement for a variety of causes.  He has devoted time externally through speaking at educational seminars and contributing several articles and information on sustainability and construction in publications such as Virginia Lawyers Weekly, Mechanical Contractor, Mid-Atlantic Construction, AIA Northern Virginia News, Construction Digital Magazine, Construction Specifier, Medical Construction & Design, Building Washington, Construction Accounting & Taxation and Commonwealth Contractor, among others.

Mr. Hughes is a member of the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Metro Washington Green Building Task Force and the ABC Virginia Green Building Committee.  He is also a member of the Arlington Chamber of Commerce Green Building Committee and the Commercial Real Estate Development Association (NAIOP) Green Committee.  Mr. Hughes is the treasurer for the  Arlington County Bar Association, vice-president of the Board of Directors for Vanguard Services Unlimited, and a member of the Board of Directors for the Arlington Chamber of Commerce, in addition to several other leadership roles.

Mr. Hughes is the third consecutive attorney from Bean, Kinney & Korman to be honored with this prestigious recognition.  Last year, Raighne Delaney was awarded the "Leader in the Law" for his work as lead counsel for the plaintiff in the first case tried under the new Virginia Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act that resulted in the thirteenth largest jury verdict in Virginia in 2009.  In 2008, Carol Schrier-Polak was recognized as the "Leader in the Law" for her work to repeal Virginia's mental health statute that previously prevented relevant mental health evidence of a child or parent to be heard by a court in custody and visitation  cases, even though the mental health of a child and parent is a factor that a court is mandated to consider.
