District of Columbia Trial Courts

The "state" trial court for the District of Columbia is the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, and is located in the H. Carl Moultrie I Courthouse. There are additional court facilities also located across the street in the historic courthouse and former City Hall, and in other buildings on D and E Streets, NW. There is a cafeteria on the "C" Street level of the Courthouse, and numerous coffee shops, delis and restaurants are located in the surrounding area.

There are numerous divisions within the Superior Court that handle different matters, including, but not limited to: Civil, Criminal, Landlord Tenant, Small Claims, Family, and Probate. The DC Bar's website offers very detailed information about the Superior Court.

Because parking around the immediate Courthouse area is exceedingly limited, taxicab and Metro are the best ways in which to travel there. The courthouse complex is one half block southwest of the Judiciary Square Metro Station on the Red Line, and two blocks east of the Archives/Navy Memorial Metro Station on the Green and Yellow Lines. There are a very few metered spots on the streets surrounding the Courthouse. Getting one of these largely depends upon luck. Several of the larger commercial buildings have public parking garages, although those drivers without monthly parking permits are usually unable to enter past 9am because the garages fill up with commuters. Sometimes, parking can be found on the Mall behind the National Gallery of Art and the East Wing. The Courthouse is one block north of the Mall, across the plaza between the Canadian Embassy and United States Courthouse.
